Writing: Students worked on writing proposals to Jack Lew, the Secretary of Treasury, to tell him who they think would be the best candidate for the new $10 bill. Students learned the different parts of a formal business letter (return address & date, recipient address, introduction/purpose, body, ending the letter with "a thank you sentence," closing, signature). They worked on including formal language as much as possible and eliminating popular slang (abbreviations, writing like we speak). We took pictures of the student groups holding their bills to show Mr. Jack Lew their ideas for the designs. Students will be sending off their proposals and pictures of their giant $10 bills after Thanksgiving break.
Project: I introduced the next project we will be covering for the rest of the semester. Students chose a state to research and will be creating a state float that incorporates 3D objects to show the components of their research. Once students complete their floats, we will have a celebration in the form of a parade in which you will be invited to attend! We will be learning the difference between a state, city, country, and continent. It was clear that many students do not know the difference between these when they suggested places like "Germany, Mexico, Hong Kong, Canada, and Maui."
Reading: When we return from Thanksgiving break we will be Reading Rump: The True Story of Rumpelstiltskin by Liesl Shurtliff. We will be reading this novel in class and students may be responsible for reading some chapters at home, I'll let you know. Please check out a copy at your local library and have your student bring on Monday/Tuesday when they return. We will be exploring a unit on Fractured Fairytales and writing our own Fractured Fairytale.
HAVE A WONDERFUL AND SAFE THANKSGIVING BREAK!
